1 March 2024 - Freiburg, Germany
The European Commission funded project BuiltHub and its partner, ICLEI Europe, were active participants in the 'Kongress Klimaneutrale Kommunen' which took place on 29.02-1.03 in Freiburg (Germany), the host city of ICLEI Europe, with the presence of over 200 participants.
The 2-day Congress is dedicated to the challenges that local actors, in this case primarily German municipalities, face in view of the energy transition. In the race towards climate-neutral cities, ensuring a robust data flow is crucial to reduce energy consumption and decarbonize European buildings. To this aim, the BuiltHub team actively engaged with local German practitioners, seeking their impressions and input to inform the project’s data roadmap and vision.
Members from the BuiltHub team and fellow ICLEI staff participated in various event sessions, including “Energy-efficient Construction and Renovation” and “Digital Solutions for Measurable, Successful, Goal-oriented Municipal Climate Protection” - sharing their unique perspective and expert knowledge in round-table discussions. The project also hosted an exhibition stand to ensure engagement and exchange with stakeholders in attendance.
The opening plenary featured Freiburg’s Lord Mayor, Martin W.W. Horn, who mentioned: "As Mayor and newly re-elected President of ICLEI Europe, I am honored to have the 'Kongress Klimaneutrale Kommunen' take place in Freiburg again this year. Freiburg exemplifies sustainable urban living, and this event reflects our shared dedication to advancing climate-neutral communities. We look forward to a fruitful gathering that will inspire and propel cities towards a resilient and low-carbon future."
A transition for which the BuiltHub project is to lend cities a hand. The project aims to accelerate urban transformation and renovation, turning buildings across Europe into more sustainable, affordable and people-friendly places. The project goal is to support transforming buildings’ data into information and knowledge by offering dedicated uses and services for platform users and beneficiaries, such as EU, national and local policy makers. By collecting insights at events such as 'Kongress Klimaneutrale Kommunen', BuiltHub grows its community of building (data) stakeholders and engages them to shape the European process for systematically collecting and sharing building-related data.

About BuiltHub
The overall aim of the Horizon 2020 BuiltHub project is to define a roadmap and vision for a durable (FAIR - Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) dataflow and collection enabling to characterise the EU building stock. The project aims to do so by developing a robust and resilient web-based IT Infrastructure (platform) that allows for collecting and extracting building performance and characteristics related data. BuiltHub will support transforming the data into information and knowledge by offering dedicated uses and services for platform users and beneficiaries, such as policy makers (EU, national and local authorities).
